Black Market Brewery Review

Black Market Leads Temecula Brewery Explosion

For years, Temecula has been defined by the popular vineyards and wineries that attract visitors all throughout Southern California. Although the oaky flavored reds and buttery white wines produced in Temecula still bring in tourists by the thousands, it is the recent brewery explosion that has local beer lovers smiling. This is because the Temecula and Murrieta region is now home to seven local breweries crafting a variety of homegrown sudsy goodness, but it is the folks over at Black Market Brewery that have set the standard when it comes to beer making in Temecula.

Black Market has been in operation in Temecula for over 3 years, providing great tasting, hand crafted beers to people throughout the valley. Owned and operated by local people from Temecula, the head brewmaster actually taught at a local high school for many years before deciding to pursue his passion for beer making. “Anyone who has lived in the Temecula valley for some time remembers the days of the few small wineries that were here”, explained Black Market production manager and head brewmaster Shaun McBride. “Now there are many wineries that are not only thriving, but exploding.  Those wineries that have managed to grow, yet retain ties to the people of the area have been among the greatest success stories.  Black Market maintains many local ties, as well as being the home meeting place of the Temecula Valley Homebrewer’s Association, an organization originally created by a group of locals.  Although we have grown, we have not forgotten who we are.”

Choosing To Start A Brewery In Temecula

Deciding where to start a small business is a crucial decision that can sometimes make or break a company, especially when that small business makes the bold choice to craft beer in a market dominated by wineries. However, Black Market Brewery realized early on that their product stacked up very well in a region that is home to some of the countries most celebrated microbreweries. When asked why Black Market Brewery decided to choose the Temecula valley as home for operations, McBride stated he felt the area was the perfect place to start a brewery, as it was, and is, made up of the right mix of people with discerning palates to offer an eclectic mix of beers to.  He also mentioned that the Temecula Valley is home to one of the most highly regarded craft brewers of our time, Vinnie Cilurzo, of Russian River Brewing (People may remember Cilurzo as the man behind Temecula’s very first local brewery, Blind Pig). The decision to choose Temecula as company headquarters has paid dividends as the people of Temecula valley have lifted Black Market Brewery to levels higher than the owners could have ever imagined or hoped. This is validated by the fact that Black Market Brewery is now distributed and served all over Southern California and will soon be distributed outside Southern California as well. Not to mention, Black Market Brewery has won a number of awards, including a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival for its Rye IPA. However, the company is quick to point out that while winning awards is a great honor, the favorite accolades are the daily positive responses Black Market Brewery receives from Southern California consumers and visitors from outside the Temecula area.  As one of the brewmasters so elegantly said, “Our success is purely grass roots and our growth is directly tied to those grass roots.”

Black Market Brewery Looks To The Future

Black Market Brewery continues to win awards and gain attention throughout Southern California for offering some of the most unique and flavorful beers, but that does not stop the company from always looking forward. In 5 years, Black Market believes it will maintain the vision it had on the day it was conceived; to provide only the finest quality, hand-crafted beers to it’s consumers. However, the list of consumers will likely be craft beer lovers all over the Unites States.

People interested in trying some of the delicious hand-crafted Black Market beers can stop by the Temecula brewery for a variety of Happy Hour prices in the tasting room, and have access to a number of special offers, especially in the month of December during the holiday season. When this Temecula daily deals editor stopped into the tasting room to sample some of the different beers the brewery offered I was blown away by how amazing two beers in particular were: the Rye IPA and Hefeweizen. The friendly bartender explained that the Bavarian Style Hefeweizen is the companies’ most popular beer because it is a hybrid beer in that it stands up well to the discerning palates of craft beer drinkers, yet it is enjoyable to people not yet experienced in big, bold craft beer flavors. A light and crisp beer with the perfect amount of flavor, the Hefeweizen is a must sample for anyone visiting the brewery. However, the best beer was the award-winning Rye IPA. As a person who loves a more hearty and full-tasting beer, the Rye IPA was the perfect balance of taste and smoothness. I enjoyed this particular beer so much that I actually reserved a keg of the Rye IPA for my wedding!
